Cabinet finishing

Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing

A sprayed cabinet finish is the single biggest change you can make to a kitchen without demolition — if it is prepped and sprayed properly.

Why sprayed, not rolled

Cabinets are the most-touched surface in the house and they are viewed at arm's length. Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labeled, degreased, sanded and sprayed off-site or in a controlled area; frames are masked and sprayed in place with containment. The result has no brush marks and cures to a hard, cleanable film that a wall paint simply cannot deliver on a cabinet.

  • Full degreasing — kitchen grease is why cabinet finishes fail
  • Hardware removal, labeling and reinstallation
  • Sanding, bonding primer and two sprayed finish coats
  • Containment and dust control in the rest of the kitchen

What can be refinished

Solid wood and engineered wood doors, painted or stained cabinetry, inset and overlay frames, islands, pantries, built-ins, bathroom vanities, mudroom lockers and paneled appliance surrounds. Thermofoil and some laminates are not good candidates, and we will tell you that up front rather than take the job.

Timeline and kitchen use

Most kitchens run several days to about a week depending on door count and the number of coats. You keep use of appliances and sink for nearly all of it; the doors are simply off during the spray and cure window.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is painting cabinets cheaper than replacing them?
Substantially — refinishing keeps the boxes, layout and hardware you already have. If the boxes are sound, refinishing is usually a fraction of the cost of new cabinetry.
Will the finish chip or peel?
Not when it is prepped correctly. Degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer are what keep a sprayed cabinet finish attached; skipping them is why do-it-yourself cabinet jobs fail.
Can you match a specific white or a designer color?
Yes — we work from designer and manufacturer specifications and will spray a sample door so you can approve the color and sheen before the full kitchen.
